About the course
Windermere Golf Club was formed in 1891 and was initially a nine hole, although 18 months later it became an 18-hole layout. However, the Second World War meant the golf course was reduced to nine holes again owing to a shortage of staff – key personnel were all serving in HM forces.
It wasn’t until 1946 that Windermere became an 18 holer again. Records show that in 1920 the golf course measured 4,320 yards and a number of holes were not just par 3, 4 and 5s: the opening hole was a four-and-a-half while the two three-and-a-halves were on the back nine.
