The picturesque and fast flowing River Pont comes into play at several holes including the 14th, one of many strong par fours. The dog-legged 16th is the pick of the par fives, but Matfen’s signature hole is surely the long par three 17th with its narrow green sited teasingly just over the river.
Denlaw Course
Our newest edition in the development of Matfen Hall is already getting excellent reviews from members and guests.
Dewlaw has been designed to blend in with the other courses as well as having its own unique features. This nine has everything you could wish for, natural water hazards, beautiful woodland and a lovely rolling landscape with fantastic views of the Northumberland countryside.
The toughest hole is the long par-4 7th. A very well bunkered fairway makes for a straight drive, then a long iron or fairway wood will be needed for a second shot over water to an undulating well guarded green. Following on is the gorgeous par 3 8th hole. This hole has its very own environment, surrounded by trees and hitting over the rushes reaching out from the lake, its certainly a hole to remember on a nine you wont forget.
Douglas Course
Regarded as the gentlest nine at Matfen Hall, the Douglas Course is the perfect start to your round.
It does however hold some formidable obstacles, the second green is the smallest of the twenty seven holes and has the now famous ‘ha ha’ wall protecting the approach into it.
Also the 7th, 8th and 9th holes are played clockwise around the imposing lake so any shot leaked to the right will definitely find water. One of the best views at Matfen Hall is from the ninth tee, just take in the panoramic view of one on Northumberland’s finest courses.
Standing Stone Course
The most challenging nine holes, not only is it the longest but you cross the natural beauty of the river Pont on no less than five occasions.
As you play round the boundary of the course, trouble lurks for a faded shot on most holes. Standing Stone has arguably the two toughest holes on the complex. The very impressive looking 14th hole, a 442 yard par 4 playing over water twice to a beautiful green site that has a unique sense of calm and privacy which can be felt throughout the golf course.
The 17th hole is a brilliantly designed par 3, fraught with trouble but at the same time very relaxing with the water and mature trees shadowing the green.
